A hernia occurs when an organ, intestine or fatty tissue
squeezes through a hole or a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective
tissue. Though the treatment is common and processed in millions every year,
the post surgery complications too are on high. And that calls for claims by

Types of Hernias and
the places of occurrence

· Femoral: in the upper thigh/outer groin
· Incisional: in an incision or scar in the abdomen
· Ventral: in the general abdominal/ventral wall
· Umbilical: at the belly button
· Hiatal: inside the abdomen, along the upper stomach/diaphragm
Causes of hernia:
Most hernias are caused by a combination of pressure and an
opening of weak muscles or connective tissue. The pressure makes the organ or
tissue protrude through the weak spot. The causes of the muscle weakening are
many including obesity, lifting heavy objects, diarrhea or constipation, persistent
coughing or sneezing, poor nutrition, smoking, and overexertion.
Treatment of hernia:
Surgical treatment includes open repair or laparoscopy. In
either case, a surgical mesh is implanted on the affected area. Surgical mesh
made of synthetic materials can be found in knitted mesh or non-knitted sheet
forms.
Post surgery
complications:
The most common adverse events for all surgical repair of
hernias—with or without mesh—are pain, infection, hernia recurrence, scar-like
tissue that sticks tissues together (adhesion), blockage of the large or small
intestine (obstruction), bleeding, abnormal connection between organs, vessels,
or intestines (fistula), fluid build-up at the surgical site (seroma), and a
hole in neighboring tissues or organs (perforation).
The lawsuit:
There are thousands of hernia mesh lawsuits claimed by the
victims of the damaged and defective surgical mesh. While many cases have been
settled, there are several others that are pending for compensation.
